WBWC first signed on in 1958 as the first totally student funded and operated radio station in the United States. In 1960, due to limited number of FM radios, WBWC began an AM carrier current campus limited broadcast operation. This operation was discontinued in 1970. In the fall of 1975, stereo facilities were added. On November 23, 1981, as a result of the FCC's move to eliminate all 10 watt stations, WBWC received permission from the FCC to begin construction to increase broadcast power from 10 to 100 watts of power. In 1995, WBWC became the first college radio station to perform a remote broadcast from the Cleveland Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. On February 14th, 2001, a 15 year effort was finally completed to raise the wattage of WBWC to 4000 watts. As a result of this effort, WBWC expanded its coverage area to serve a greater portion of the Cleveland area and much of Lorain County.
